Quagga Project Spring Equinox

It is hard for a lot of us to put the environmental and systems impact of the quagga and zebra mussel into perspective.  Some of the most impressive and shocking examples of the mussels impact and mass quantity has been seen on boat motors, clogged water system pipes, and fisheries around the country.  This mussel has been spotted in various bodies of water in the state of Arizona.

There is no other way to put it...these little creatures are a huge problem, the trickle down effect of their presence affects us all whether we realize it or not.

Working in conjunction with SRP(Salt River Project) and Scottsdale Public Art I developed an interactive community participation project that I believe has helped bring more awareness of the quagga shell, incited curiosity, and created a lasting visual impact piece that children and adults were proud to participate in.

the basic concept of the Quagga House  was:
“if this was in your own house, would you do things differently
when you use our lakes and waterways?”

Participants were be able to add shells throughout the day through the chimney opening.  The interactive Quagga House element went along with an art making activity.

Special thanks to Scottsdale Public Art and SRP!

For the heart

I wanted to send a heart-felt shout out to all of the families and staff at Phoenix Children's Hospital, Beads of Courage, and Cardon Children's Medical Center in Arizona that I have had the privilege of working with over the past 7 years

This little guy is a true miracle!  Heart transplant then up and running around in a few days.  Every bead around his neck represents the pokes, tests, surgeries, and nights in the hospital he has endured in his young life.  Every bead represents his courage!

Beads of Courage, Inc. is an amazing non profit organization I create programs forThey help children coping with serious illness to communicate their personal story through art and symbolism.

The programs help children and teens in over 115 hospitals around the world including the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, Japan, the U.K., Ireland, and Scotland.

national christmas tree project

National Christmas Tree Project
I completed a project about a month ago with two Free Arts AZ  group home locations.
the teens created ornaments from clay then painted them with bright colors and sparkles.  The theme was Christmas in Arizona.  All of the ornaments hang proudly in Washington DC on a tree representing Arizona.

A few examples of the kids ornaments:
